For a little over a year now my friend and I have had our own little company called Portraits of Power. It all started when my business partner, Eveline, read Braving the Wilderness by Brene Brown. It changed the way she looked at the world and wanted to live. Braving the Wilderness digs deeply into what it means to be vulnerable and finding true belonging. Belonging is what we all crave in life, to belong to our family, or our friends, or in our team, etc.
After she shared this with me, I immediately wanted to read this book. I remember sitting in the train to Germany and reading this thinking, damn this really has things that could change my life. It really did change my life. I’m happy that I’ve had this blog for so long, because in the months following I got to use the principles from Braving the Wilderness multiple times. It changed the way I dealt with my break up, how I reacted when I was assaulted at the Train Station, what I did when I was learning to become who I wanted to be, in my friendships and relationships.
Using this as inspiration, Eveline and I spent a day in The Hague brainstorming how we could make this into a concept that included vulnerability, authenticity, lack of judgement, uniqueness, etc. We came up with Portraits of Power, where we do photoshoots with people, and proceed to ask them 4 questions about vulnerability. We combine the four questions into a story that we share in 3 parts, with the pictures we have taken. The questions are:
- What is the best quality you have?
- How are you vulnerable in everday life?
- How do you see other people?
- What advice would you like to give people?
We share the answers to the questions, with powerful portraits of our clients, showing the world that everyone is beautiful, unique, vulnerable, and even though life is really messy and hard sometimes by being these things together, that’s how we get through it.
