Through coincidence I by talking to a friend we got on the topic of Ezekiel 37 which is titled The Valley of Dry Bones. It’s a story where God took Ezekiel to a valley of dry bones, thousands of them and commanded him to say to the bones, “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.” Ezekiel did as he was commanded, and there was a rattling sound as the bones started coming together. Tendons started appearing on the skeletons and flesh covered them, but there was no breath in them. So the Lord told Ezekiel to prophesy to the breath, and breath came into the bodies.
Then the Lord said to Ezekiel that those are the bones of the people of Israel, that their bones are dried up and cut off, but the sovereign Lord says to his people that he will open their graves and bring them up from them, he will bring them back to the land of Israel. Then his people will know he is Lord, he will put his spirit in them and they will live.
It’s an odd story when you hear it at first, thinking of dry bones all coming together and making living, breathing humans. That there’s a God who has the power to do call bones to life, and give such a power to a man. The thing about this passage though is that it’s God’s sovereignty showing. It’s his faithfulness to his people, even though they may think he has forgotten about them he hasn’t. It’s the same way for us.
Everybody goes through high periods and low periods, times of pure bliss and joy and times when you yourself are walking through the valley of dry bones. Times where it seems God isn’t there or that he’s abandoned you. The thing is though that he hasn’t, God never simply abandons his people, but there are times he allows us to go through difficult things without hearing from him. Why? because the teacher is always quiet during the test. There are times that it is important to allow these storms and not immediately want God to end it. Every storm comes to teach us something, in every situation in life there is something to learn.
Back in September I went through one of these valleys, a time where no matter how much I prayed I did not get an answer. I don’t think I’ve ever prayed as much as I did in that time, and in good time when I had finally realised why I had to have gone through such an intense storm I started understanding why God had been quiet. I had lessons that I needed to learn, lessons I asked him to teach me and it seemed I had to come to those conclusions. God was never far, he was always right there beside me but I just had to go through the test without directly hearing or feeling him next to me. However he is always faithful. The fact that I am here today proves that, because alone I would not have come out of that valley, but because of his faithfulness to me I am where I am today.
